GOLF: ELCA’s Charlie Reeves caps off memorable career with fine showing at Class A-Private championship

LOCUST GROVE — Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy’s Charlie Reeves entered the second day of the Class A-Private state golf championships just three shots off the lead.

Reeves shot a 73 on Monday at Heron Bay Golf and Country Club in Locust Grove, but couldn’t make a run on Tuesday to close in on an individual state title. Reeves finished tied for 16th after shooting a 77 to end his season and career.

“I thought I had a chance and after yesterday I was only a couple back from the leader and I realized I could make a run today if I played well,” Reeves said. “I just couldn’t get the ball rolling today and couldn’t take off.”

Reeves was the only member of the ELCA golf team to qualify for the state tournament, and one of only two individuals in the county to do so. He was the low medalist at the Area 3 A-Private tournament earlier this month, punching his ticket to state.

His season got off to a rocky start when he shot a 40 over nine holes in an early season match. After bouncing back with a solid score in his next outing, Reeves took off and was consistent all year for the Chargers. His average nine-hole score this season was 38.4.

“In the second or third match of the year, I shot 40 which is not like me and the next match I followed up with 36, even-par,” Reeves said. “I was able to critique my mistakes and hit better shots.”

It was the second trip to the state championships for Reeves during his career at ELCA. He started off his athletic career at the school on the football field, but quickly learned of his ability on the links.

“It was awesome and I wanted to get it my senior year,” Reeves said. “It felt good representing ELCA and we have a great athletic program. To keep the golf and the great name of the athletic program going is really nice.”

Reeves will leave ELCA as the recipient of the 11th Annual Rusty Strawn and Co. Insurance Most Valuable Golfer Award. He will be attending Calhoun Community College on scholarship.

He said he will always remember his final high school tournament, but that he’s excited for the next chapter of his career.

“There are some (shots) that I want back but that’s golf,” Reeves said. “I’m just looking forward to the next part of my career and looking to compete in more golf.”
