ELCA scoring, defense keys post-season drive

All athletic coaches. regardless of the sport, hope their team is playing at its highest level during the post-season.

Eagle's Landing Christian Academy girl's varsity basketball coach Andy Whitlock said his Charger ladies are not only at that plateau, but have done so at the right time and seem to be building on it.

ELCA (17-8) reached the state Class A quarterfinals last week and advanced to its classification's "Elite 8" with a 52-39 win over Fairburn's Our Lady of Mercy.

Whitlock called that game one of the team's best this season at either end of the court.

ELCA was scheduled to meet Calvary Day of Savannah (28-1) last Friday in the quarterfinals and, if the lady Chargers could defeat them and hand the Cavaliers only their second loss of the season, they would have then advanced to the state semi-finals last Saturday to meet the winner of the Tattnall Square-Greenforest game.

ELCA entered the Calvary Day game having scored 1,214 points this season, an average of 49 points a game, while allowing 38.

It will be a tough challenge for ELCA's defense, however, as Calvary Day entered the game averaging 62 points a game while allowing 37.

Although he has been pleased with the lady Chargers performance on both ends of the court, Whitlock said the team would need to maximize its defensive effort against Calvary Day.

"We play a strict man-to-man defense and have played it well but Calvary Day really presents a big challenge," he said.

Although Charger senior Abigail Rogers, who is averaging 14 points a game, is the only player averaging in double figures on the squad, her classmate, Catie Wallace, is "right up there in scoring," Whitlock said, averaging about nine points an encounter.

The club's lone freshman, India Bellamy, who suffered a broken ankle earlier this season, was able to return to the court in the Our Lady of Mercy game where she scored nine points.

"India's return has come at a great time for us as having her on the court gives us addition scoring options which we have missed since her injury," Whitlock said.

Another strong point for ELCA as it entered the Calvary Day game was that, outside of the scoring consistency of Rogers and Wallace, the team has had a different player to step into the scoring spotlight in about every game, which increases the club's offensive spectrum.
